One Hundred Marines Compete for a Worthy Cause

My brother’s Blog just alerted me to this great cause! Like to Grill? Want to support the Military? Buy this book!

Weber Presents: Command of the Grill

In
2005, active duty and reserve Marines at 10 military installations
around the country took up their tongs in the ultimatebuy the book battle of the
barbecue. They marinated, seared, and sauced in an all-out battle for
top grilling honors. This book showcases the winning recipes from the
competition, along with steak recipes from famous former Marines like
Lee Trevino and Ed McMahon.

All proceeds from the sale of the book go to charities that support wounded or killed U.S. Marines and their families.

Pinky and the Brain on DVD!

It’s official! Pinky and the Brain and Animaniacs are coming to DVD on July 25th! Very cool! It’s about time I gotta say, nothing like striking while the iron is hot huh? Pinky and the Brain is over 10 years old and Animaniacs is 12 years old. It’s hard to believe it’s taken this long to finally get them out but I am glad they finally did. I hope there’s some cool extras on it. the article mentios Maurice LaMarsh (voice of The Brain)will be hosting the series so that should be cool.

I was fortunate enough to work on both of these series back in “the day” so I guess that’s why I am looking forward to it. Not really sure if any kids even know what these shows are (or care for that matter. you can learn more about the series here.) but they are the reason TV animation is as big as it is in my opinion.

Now if they would only release a Tazmania DVD (clip) or a Histeria DVD.(clip) Although I doubt that as they were not hit shows like P&B and Animaniacs. Still, I’d like to get all the epsides on DVD.

I worked on probably about 20 episodes of Tazmania and 20 or more episodes of Animaniacs. As for Pinky and the Brain I directed I think 7 of them and worked on the first one when it was just a segement on Animaniacs among others.

By the way I was perusing the link I gave you above and I notivced that three of the P&B cartoons I directed got a perfect score on the site! Pretty cool! One was called Dangerous Brains and another was called The Tailor and the Mice.(clip) the third was called Pinky’s P.O.V. (clip) Granted it’s only dictated by a few votes but it’s still fun to think someone out there liked something I was a part of.

Just enter your zip code in the site below, and it tells you which gas stations have the cheapest prices (and the highest) on gas in your zip code area. It’s updated every evening.

Temple of the Seven Camels

(from: Temple of the Seven Camels)
If you want to learn anything about staging, drawing, story, animation or composition you NEED to run over to this guys Blog. Mark Kennedy is a veteran animator who has worked at Disney Feature for years and he has volumes of insightful advice to share with you. There are so many wonderful illustrations like the one above that it’s almost too much. I said, almost! This is one of those sites where you need to get curled up on the sofa with your wireless laptop and read for the next few hours. Yes he has that much up there. Great stuff!

Sitcoms on Cartoon Network?

As many of you have no doubt heard, Cartoon Network has decided to get into the Live Action biz and try to get back some viewers they’ve apparently lost to Nickelodeon and Disney Channel with such shows as Drake and Josh, Zoe 101, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and That’s So Raven.
The animation industry isn’t so happy about it I guess as well as a ton of CN fans.

There’s a petition going on here to stop them, which clearly won’t stop them from their endeavor but it might make them realize that it might not be the best move after all.

Me? What do I think? I have no clue which is better, but being as I feed my family with work from the animation industry I would rather they didn’t cause even more work to dry up for me and my fellow animators only to find it backfire and thus screw up their fine network.

They’ve begun to show reruns of Saved by the Bell as well as other classic sitcoms. I’ve heard even Boomerang is showing live action now!
MIchael Sporn has an interesting read about Cartoon Network’s apparent move to show Live-Action programming which I have to say, seems a bit nutty. » Cartoon Network/No mo’
Here’s another take from Cartoon Brew

Doesn’t Time Warner have another network to do this with already? If fact didn’t WB just merge with another network because their ratings were low? Maybe I’ve got that wrong and it was for different reasons but that’s what I thought the reason was. Seems odd to me that Cartoon Network would try to become the new WB for Kids if the original Network wasn’t working well enough on it’s own.
Well I wish them luck as if Time Warner fails we in the entertainment industry all fail!

AWN Development article

If you’re at all interested in the Pitching Process and what to do and what NOT to do (boy the things I could say about THAT!), check this link out for AWN’s Online Magazine where the entire issue is primarily devoted to Pitching Cartoons to networks. Great read!
